Mr. Bantry
poetry by Margot Van Sluytman

Margot Van Sluytman

Creativity is the soul’s very own nourishment. It feeds upon and is fed by community that gathers to let our words mirror our complex and generous spirits. Each of us, no matter where we are, no matter who we are, is a poet, is a writer, is a storyteller. Even if we only birth two words, we birth our meaning. Each of us, upon picking up a stubby pencil or well-chewed pen, spins magic when we write. No fancy formula is required, for we each own simple and abundant beauty. This poem was birthed when I shared the most rich time in one of my writing workshops at the Calgary Drop-In & Rehab Centre, as a few kindred souls gathered one sun-speckled Monday afternoon in order to afford ‘awe’ and delight a space to dance. Writing together is prayer, is risk, is a simple response to life’s ever-unfolding mystery.
